News on Archives, Holdings and Institutions

» Moscow: Stalin and Politburo Fonds Online

The Russian Federal Archives Agency in cooperation with several Russian state archives has launched a new internet portal dedicated to documents of Soviet history. Dokumenty Sovetskoi epokhi (»Documents of the Soviet Era«) will host digital copies of several Russian holdings crucial to Soviet and communist studies and is accessable free of charge. Currently it is hosting roughly 300.000 images from the holdings of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the CPSU and from Stalin’s personal papers, both held at the Russian State Archive of Social and Political History (RGASPI). The digitised Politburo holdings encompass the protocols of the Politburo sessions (f. 17, op. 3 and 163) from 1919 to 1932 (the subsequent years are scheduled to be put online in the future), as well as the Politburo’s so-called »special folder« (osobaia papka, f. 17, op. 162) from 1923 into the early 1940s. The digitised Stalin holdings include, most importantly, the dictator’s correspondence (f. 558, op. 11). The interface is in Russian only, many images are »not available«, and many crucial documents, especially on the Great Terror, still remain classified and thus are not included in the project, nevertheless the new portal is a groundbreaking opportunity (not only) for historians abroad to work with some of the most important Russian archival holdings for Soviet history. The portal is accessible at sovdoc.rusarchives.ru.

» Moscow: New Issue of Stalin’s Shooting Lists CD

The human rights NGO »Memorial«, in cooperation with the Russian State Archive of Social and Political History (RGASPI), has issued a new version of the compact disk containing digitised versions of Stalin’s »shooting lists«, supplied by additional documents. During the Great Terror in the Soviet Union, these lists were compiled by regional NKVD branches and sent to Stalin for his approval. The CD is an update for the first release of the disk in 2002. For an official statement of Memorial, see www.memo.ru/d/149069.html. For an English language article in The Moscow News, see themoscownews.com/arts/20130401/191398004-print/Stalins-secret-kill-lists-.html.

» Marxists Internet Archive: »The Spanish Revolution« P.O.U.M. Bulletin Online

In cooperation with the Riazanov Library Project, the Marxists Internet Archive hosts scans of The Spanish Revolution, the English-language bulletin of the P.O.U.M. (Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista), the independent communist party that played a prominent role in the Spanish Civil War. 28 issues of the bulletin from 1936 and 1937 are available online at www.marxists.org/history/spain/poum/spanishrevolution/.

» Early American Marxism: Proletarian Party of America Internal Bulletin Online

The Early American Marxism website has digitised, in cooperation with the Holt
Labor Library, San Francisco, and the Riazanov Digital Archive Project, five issues of the extremely rare internal bulletin of the Proletarian Party of America (PPA) from the first half of 1933. The PPA was a small independent communist party founded in 1920 in Detroit and dissolved in 1971. It was most known for operating the Charles H. Kerr publishing house, the United States’ oldest Marxist publisher. The digitised bulletins, along with a paper on the history of the PPA by Tim Davenport, are available at www.marxisthistory.org/subject/usa/eam/13-13.html

» Recent Articles by Lars T. Lih

Lars T. Lih, a Canadian scholar of communism and revolutionary Russia, probably best known for his groundbreaking study »Lenin Rediscovered. What Is to Be Done? John Riddell’s blog has compiled these contributions, which deal with the Bolsheviks, Lenin, and Kautsky: johnriddell.wordpress.com/2013/04/16/lars-lih-online-nine-recent-studies-on-bolshevism-lenin-and-kautsky/

» New Microforms from Ukraine and Russia at the Bavarian State Library in Munich

During the past couple of years the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Bavarian State Library; abbreviated as »BSB«) has continued to acquire microform collections on Ukrainian and Russian history. In some cases, in fact, the BSB seems to be the only library holding such a collection. The largest part of these records comes from the »State Archives of Kyiv Oblast« and concerns three topics:

a) Jewish history in Ukraine/Russia in the 19th and early 20th century, including emigration up to the end of the 1920s;

b) the situation in Ukraine around 1917/18;

c) the German occupation of the Kiev region, and resistance to it during World War II.

The collections on c) are especially large and can be used, not just as sources on political and military history, but also for social history. You can find the titles of these collections plus details, including online guides and call numbers, in the »Verzeichnis der Mikroformen zur Geschichte in der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek« (»Directory of microforms on history at the BSB«): www.bsb-muenchen.de/mikro/litten.htm. There is also a special »update« page: www.bsb-muenchen.de/mikro/littenup.htm.

Not yet listed are some collections we expect to receive this year (in total running to about 250.000 pages):

a) again from the »State Archives of Kyiv Oblast« some smaller collections on the situation in 1917/18, as well as two larger collections, one on the town of Belaia Tsrkov during the German occupation in the early 1940s, the other on resistance to the German occupation in Ukraine;

b) from the Russian State Library a collection of documents on the »German front« in World War I.

As can be seen, there is quite some material here that might also be of interest for studies of the Communist era. Please note that the microfilm collections can be sent out on loan to all German libraries connected to the German interlibrary-loan network, which includes university libraries.

Research Projects and Dissertations – Work in Progress

Jesper Jørgensen, The Workers’ Museum and the Labour Movement’s, Library and Archives (Copenhagen, Denmark):

» Danish-Russian Archive Project: The Danish Personal Files in the Comintern Archives

As it is well known, the collapse of the Soviet Empire gave historians working with communism and the Soviet Bloc countries an abundance of new possibilities. Especially the early 1990s were an era of great optimism. Even in the centre of the empire it was suddenly permitted to look into some of the most secret documents of the fallen communist regime.

In Denmark the former chairman of the Danish Communist Party, Ole Sohn, and a former Moscow correspondent of the Danish communist daily newspaper Land og Folk, Kurt Jacobsen, were among the first to use the new Russian sources. They began writing biographies on Arne Munch-Petersen, a Danish parliamentarian who disappeared in Stalin’s purges in 1937, and on Aksel Larsen, the chairman of the Danish Communist Party through the 1930s, 40s and 50s. Because of their positions as trusted communists, they started their research as early as in the late 1980s under influence of Gorbachev’s Glasnost policy. In the early 1990s, however, access to archives was very good for all scholars, and Danish researchers saw this as an opportunity to obtain copies from the Comintern Archives. Most of these have been transferred to The Labour Movements Libary and Archives (ABA) and are now, alongside the archive of the Danish Communist Party, the most important resources to research on Danish communism.

However there was one category of Comintern documents which was not accessible for researchers in the 1990s – the Danish personal files (Opis 208, in Fund 495: The Archive of the Comintern’s Executive Committee). Later with the INCOMKA Project – The International Committee for the Computerization of the Komintern Archives which created the Comintern online database – we found out that there was 466 folders (dela) on a variety of persons, from volunteers in the Spanish civil war and cadres of the Danish Communist Party to leading Danish politicians and personalities such as Social-democratic Prime Ministers during the Cold War era. Nowadays we know that while some files are very thin, containing only basic personal data and in some cases TASS telegrams, other files are larger dossiers with a wide range of different kind of materials: autobiographies, authorized biographies, party school evaluations, letters, questionnaires (»Fragenbogen«), couriers’ report schedules etc. Altogether the documents amount to more than 11,000 pages. The biggest file within these holdings is on the chairman Aksel Larsen. It contains nearly 1,000 pages and covers the period from 1925 to 1972. The end year is somewhat surprising as Comintern was disbanded in 1943, but evidently the personal files continued to be in use up to at least 1989.

In the last 10 years we have had several requests on the personal files, especially from biographers on Danish communists. Without contacts in Russia and without experience with the Russian archival system or the Russian language many researchers find it difficult to include theses documents in their research, and some give up before even trying, while others have been in Moscow to see the files. Overall there have been a lot of expectations in regard to the files, for instance concerning information on underground activities in the 1930s.

On that background a Danish project group with participants from the Centre for Cold War Studies, University of Southern Denmark (Thomas Wegener Friis), Roskilde University (Chris Holmsted Larsen), The Royal Library (Morten Møller), and The Workers’ Museum & ABA (Jesper Jørgensen) in 2010 prepared a collecting and research project on the Danes in the Comintern. Fortunately, the project was granted economic support from the Danish Carlsberg Foundation. Yet we could not have started without some indications about a chance to realise the project – which we got through the help from the Ludwig Boltzmann-Institut für Kriegsfolgenforschung in Graz, Austria. Since many years the institute maintains a close cooperation with the Russian State Archive of Social and Political History (RGASPI) which mainly holds pre-1952 archives of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, including the Comintern Archives, and with the Russian State Archive of Contemporary History (RGANI), which mainly holds post-1952 communist archives.

In the beginning of 2012 an agreement with RGASPI was signed, and the scanning of the files and the transfer of copies of 402 personal files began (the rest of the 466 dela is either at RGANI or are »svobodnyi«, meaning the numbers are not assigned to real files). In the end of the year the process was successfully brought to an end. The Danish-Russian Archive Project also includes publishing a primary source collection based on the personal files. The publication will include the documents in facsimile, consequently mainly in Russian, German and Danish, and will be published in 2013. As an early result of the project the first Danish-Russian conference on contemporary history since many years was held in September 2011 at the University of Southern Denmark. Researchers from leading archives and universities in Russia and Denmark participated with presentations concerning the Comintern and Danish-Soviet relations. An anthology with the same title based on the conference papers and edited by Jesper Jørgensen, Alexander Chubaryan, Andrei Sorokin and Thomas Wegener Friis was published in December 2012.

» The Alexander Bogdanov Library

The Historical Materialism Book Series at Brill has initiated a project to publish ten volumes of English translations of the major theoretical and polemical works of the Russian Social-Democrat, A. Bogdanov (Alexander A. Malinovsky, 1873–1928).

Alexander Bogdanov was a co-founder, with Lenin, of the Bolshevik fraction of the Russian Social-Democratic Labour Party, and he played a leadership role in the RSDLP during the Revolution of 1905. After the revolution, he split with Lenin over both theoretical and practical issues, and his polemics with Lenin provide a fascinating glimpse into Russian Social Democracy between the Revolutions of 1905 and 1917. Bogdanov played no political role in the October Revolution, but afterwards he was an influential figure in Soviet culture. He founded and led the »Proletarian Culture« movement from 1918–20; he helped found and was a member of the Socialist (later Communist) Academy; he was a faculty member in Moscow State University’s Institute of Scientific Philosophy; and he was the director of Russia’s first institute for blood transfusion in the last two years of his life.

Bogdanov was first and foremost a historical materialist. His life project was to express the fundamental principles of historical materialism in what he felt was the most up-to-date scientific terms. He believed that the task of philosophy was not to contemplate the world, but to change it. He believed that the motive force of historical evolution originated in labour. He looked forward to a collectivist society and a culture created by the working class. Early in his writing career, he believed that the empiricist philosophy of Ernst Mach and Richard Avenarius – reinterpreted from the standpoint of labour collectivism – best served as the foundation of a materialist view of the world. Later, as his political activity subsided, he attempted to develop a scientific approach toward understanding the nature of future collectivist society and the necessary cultural, social, economic and political changes involved in any attempt to bring about such a society. His contribution to the analysis of culture, long before »cultural studies« came into existence, was enormous and his influence in articulating the new approach of »ideological science« was significant. Finally, Bogdanov’s idea of tektology, later discovered in the theory of systems, was a bold attempt to theorize organizational structures as such, ultimately resulting in the theorization of socialism as the ultimate goal of human collective existence.

The General Editors of the Bogdanov Library are John Biggart, Evgeni V. Pavlov, and David G. Rowley, and the Advisory Board includes Craig Brandist, Georgi Gloveli, McKenzie Wark, and James White.

The projected volumes are as follows:

Volume 1: Empiriomonism

This volume will contain all three volumes of Bogdanov’s Empiriomonism, a collection of essays which express his first fully developed reformulation of historical materialism on the basis of Richard Avenarius’s Empirio-criticism.

Volume 2: Essays in Social Psychology (1901–1906)

This is a collection of essays originally published in 1904 and revised and enlarged in 1906. Among the key ideas that Bogdanov develops is the principle of ›socio-morphism‹ – that forms of thought are modeled on forms of labour and economic relationships. He also carries on polemics with other philosophical trends.

Volume 3: Political Writings (1904 to 1928)

This volume will include some of Bogdanov’s general writings on liberalism and Menshevism, but will be primarily devoted to tracing the divergence between Lenin and Bogdanov which culminated in the formation of the »Vpered« (»Forward«) group of the RSDLP which contested Lenin’s claim to be the standard bearer of true Bolshevism. Materials will include Bogdanov’s analysis of the split within Bolshevism; his writings on the First World War (where he provided the first definition of »War Communism«); his commentaries on the February Revolution and on Lenin’s seizure of power and his interpretation of social and political developments after October 1917, notably his writings on the emergence in Soviet Russia of a »new class«.

Volume 4: Our Disagreements: Against Plekhanov and Lenin

This volume will provide the philosophical aspect of Bogdanov’s break with Lenin. It will contain The Adventures of a Certain Philosophical School, The Fall of the Great Fetishism (which includes Bogdanov’s response to Lenin’s Materialism and Empiriocriticism), and a selection of shorter essays on philosophy.

Volume 5: The Cultural Tasks of Our Time: Essays on Proletarian Culture

Bogdanov’s key writings on Proletarian Culture, including The Cultural Tasks of Our Time, selections from On Proletarian Culture, 1904–1924, and various articles from the journal Proletarian Culture and elsewhere.

Volume 6: The Science of Social Consciousness

The basis of this volume will be the 1914 short book called The Science of Social Consciousness:
A Short Course of Ideological Science in Questions and Answers that lays the foundation for Bogdanov’s theory of ideology (or »spiritual culture«). This will be a companion volume to the volume on »cultural tasks«.

Volume 7: The Tenth Anniversary of Excommunication from Marxism

This volume will include: Selections from The Tenth Anniversary of Excommunication from Marxism (1914), selections from Bogdanov’s unpublished autobiographical manuscripts, from his biographical observations concerning other revolutionary figures, and from unpublished letters and communications.

Volume 8: Philosophy of Living Experience

The Philosophy of Living Experience. Materialism, Empiriocriticism, Dialectical Materialism, Empiriomonism, the Science of the Future. Popular Outlines (1913; 1923) with the appendix to the 1923 edition, »From Religious to Scientific Monism«. This is Bogdanov’s summative statement of his philosophy that anticipates his ultimate philosophical achievement: universal organisational science.

Volume 9: Tektology: Universal Organisational Science

This will contain all three parts of Tektologiia: Vseobshchaia organizatsionnaia nauka, a pioneering work in systems theory, in which Bogdanov proposed that all physical, biological, and human sciences could be unified by treating them as systems of relationships and by seeking the organisational principles that underlie all such systems.

Volume 10: Writings on Socialism

This volume will contain a variety of articles and books on socialism and political economy, including ›On Socialism‹, New World, ›Socialism in the Present‹, Problems of Socialism, The Socialism of Science: The Scientific Tasks of the Proletariat, selections from A Short Course of Economic Science, and economic essays from the 1920s.

The translation of Volumes One, Three, Five, Seven, and Eight are already in progress. The editors are eagerly seeking volunteers to translate the remaining volumes. Potential translators should contact any of the General Editors: John Biggart (john_biggart@hotmail.com), Evgeni Pavlov (epavlov@msudenver.edu), or David Rowley (rowleyd@uwplatt.edu).

V.2 Presentations and Announcements

Hermann Weber, Jakov Drabkin, Bernhard H. Bayerlein, Aleksandr Galkin:

» Deutschland, Russland, Komintern. I. Überblicke, Analysen, Diskussionen. Neue Pers-
pektiven auf die Geschichte der KPD und die Deutsch-Russischen Beziehungen (1918–1943), Redaktion: Bernhard H. Bayerlein, Gleb Albert, Berlin-Boston, De Gruyter, 2014. 477 S. (Archive des Kommunismus – Pfade des XX. Jahrhunderts. 5). ISBN 978-3-11-030098-7.

Hermann Weber, Jakov Drabkin, Bernhard H. Bayerlein: Deutschland, Russland, Komintern. II. Dokumente (1918–1943). Nach der Archivrevolution: Neuerschlossene Quellen zur Geschichte der KPD und den Deutsch-Sowjetischen Beziehungen. Editorische Bearbeitung: Bernhard H. Bayerlein und Gleb J. Albert. Unter Mitarbeit von Gleb J. Albert, Mariana Korcˇagina und Natal’ja Lebedeva. Übersetzungen aus dem Russischen, Französischen und Englischen von Gleb J. Albert und Bernhard H. Bayerlein, 2 vols., ca. 1900 S., Berlin-Boston, De Gruyter, 2014 (Archive des Kommunismus – Pfade des XX. Jahrhunderts. 5, 1/2). ISBN 978-3-11-033976-5.

(Verlagsinformation)

Frederick C. Corney (ed.):

» Trotsky’s Challenge. The »Literary Discussion« of 1924 and the Fight for the Bolshevik Revolution, Leiden-Boston, Brill, 2014. Approx. 500 pp.
(Historical Materialism Book Series).

In late 1924, Leon Trotsky wrote The Lessons of October, a critique of the October Revolution and its significance for the early Soviet state. It elicited an outpouring of harsh criticism from his fellow Bolsheviks that was known as the »literary discussion«. Lasting for barely three months, this officially orchestrated polemic around Trotsky’s writings bore implications far beyond its immediate context, entailing severe personal, political, and ideological ramifications for subsequent Soviet political culture. In this treatment, Corney provides new, fully annotated translations of the major contributions of the »literary discussion«, from Trotsky, Stalin, Bukharin, Zinoviev, Kamenev, Molotov, Krupskaia, Rykov, and Kun, among others, an extensive glossary, and an extended introduction contextualising its personal, political, and ideological effects. (Information by the author)

Richard B. Day, Mikhail M. Gorinov (eds.):

» The Preobrazhensky Papers. Archival Documents and Materials. Volume I: 1886–1920, Leiden-Boston, Brill, 2014. Approx. 960 pp. (Historical Materialism Book Series. 47). – ISBN 978-9-00424-521-1.

Historians generally recognise E. A. Preobrazhensky as the most famous Soviet economist of the 1920s. English-language readers know him best as author of The New Economics and co-author (with N. I. Bukharin) of The ABC of Communism. The documents in this volume, many newly discovered and almost all translated into English for the first time, reveal a Preobrazhensky previously unknown, whose interests ranged far beyond economics to include not only party debates and issues affecting the lives of workers and peasants, but also philosophy, world events, and Russian history, culture and politics. Including moments of triumph and tragedy, they tell an intimate story of political awakening and of commitment to socialist revolution as the path to human dignity. (Information by the publisher)

Jack M. Bloom:

» Seeing Through the Eyes of the Polish Revolution. Solidarity and the Struggle Against Communism in Poland, Leiden-Boston, Brill, 2013. XI, 428 pp. (Historical Materialism Book Series. 50). – ISBN 978-9-0042-3180-1.

In 1980 Polish workers astonished the world by demanding and winning an independent union with the right to strike, called Solidarity – the beginning of the end of the Soviet empire. Jack M. Bloom’s Seeing Through the Eyes of the Polish Revolution explains how it happened, from the imposition to Communism to its end, based on 150 interviews of Solidarity leaders, activists, supporters and opponents. Bloom presents the perspectives and experiences of these participants. He shows how an opposition was built, the battle between Solidarity and the ruling party, the conflicts that emerged within each side during this tense period, how Solidarity survived the imposition of martial law and how the opposition forced the government to negotiate itself out of power. S. A. Smith (ed.):

» The Oxford Handbook of the History of Communism, Oxford e. a., Oxford University Press, 2014. 672 pp. (Oxford Handbooks in History). – ISBN 978-0-1996-0205-6.

Until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, historians knew relatively little about the secretive world of communist states and parties. Since then, the opening of state, party and diplomatic archives of the former Eastern Bloc has released a flood of new documentation. The thirty-five essays in the Handbook, written by a highly international team of scholars, draw on this new material to offer a global history of communism in the twentieth century. In contrast to many histories that concentrate on the Soviet Union, it is genuinely global in its coverage, paying particular attention to the Chinese Revolution. It is »global«, too, in the sense that the essays seek to integrate history »from above« and »from below«, to trace the complex mediations between state and society, and to explore the social and cultural as well as the political and economic realities that shaped the lives of citizens fated to live under communist rule. The essays reflect on the similarities and differences between communist states in order to situate them in their socio-political and cultural contexts and to capture their changing nature over time. Where appropriate, they also reflect on how the fortunes of international communism were shaped by the wider economic, political and cultural forces of the capitalist world. The Handbook provides an informative introduction for those new to the field and a comprehensive overview of the current state of scholarship for those seeking to deepen their understanding. » Ruth Fischer. Ein Leben mit und gegen Kommunisten. 1895–1961, Köln e. a., Böhlau, 2013. 750 pp. (Zeithistorische Studien. 51). – ISBN 978-3-4122-1014-4.

Fredrik Petersson:

» Willi Münzenberg, the League against Imperialism, and the Comintern,
1925–1933, Lewiston, Edwin Mellen Press/Queenston Press, 2013. 1152 pp. – ISBN 978-0-7734-4298-6.

On 10 February 1927, the »First International Congress against Imperialism and Colonialism« in Brussels marked the establishment of the anti-imperialist organisation, the League against Imperialism and for National Independence (LAI, 1927–37). The complex preparations for the congress were though initiated already in 1925 after the successful propaganda campaign Hands off China in Germany, under the personal supervision by Willi Münzenberg, the German communist and General Secretary of the communist mass organisation, Internationale Arbeiterhilfe (IAH, 1921–35), together with the Communist International (Comintern, 1919–43). Berlin functioned as the operative and symbolic centre for the LAI and its International Secretariat (1927–33), a city that housed about 5,000 colonial émigrés after the Great War, and therefore answered to the intentions of the communists to find willing and capable anti-colonial activists in the Weimar capita. With the ascendancy to power of the Nazi Party (NSDAP) on 30 January 1933, the LAI reached an abrupt, but nonetheless, expected end in Berlin.

This book is the published version of the doctoral thesis (»We Are Neither Visionaries Nor Utopian Dreamers«. Willi Münzenberg, the League against Imperialism, and the Comintern, 1925–1933, defended at Åbo Akademi University, 3 May 2013) which examines the role, purpose and functions of a sympathising organization (LAI) rallying for a specific cause: to act as an intermediary for the Comintern to the colonies. The analysis focus on evaluating the structure and activities of the LAI, and by doing so, establishes a complex understanding on one of the most influential communist organisations active during the interwar period, which, despite its short existence, assumed a nostalgic reference and historical bond for anti-colonial movements during the transition from colonialism to post-colonialism after the Second World War, e.g. the Afro-Asian Conference in Bandung, Indonesia in 1955. While the study essentially is a political history of the dynamics and shortcomings of the Comintern and the international communist movement (organisations and national parties) to gain a foothold within the anti-colonial movements’ characteristic of the interwar years, the book pays equal attention to the individuals that devoted all of their attention to building up and sustaining anti-imperialism in theory and practice. The book, which covers two volumes (1,131 pages) includes an appendix (Dramatis Personae) which concisely introduces these individuals, e.g. the Indian nationalist Virendranath Chattophadyaya, the Hungarian communist Louis Gibarti, the Chinese nationalist revolutionary Hansin Liau, the British socialist Reginald Bridgeman, the Czechoslovakian communist Bohumil Šmeral, the Turkish communist Bekar Ferdi, the émigré Malian nationalist Garan Tiemoko Kouyaté, alongside the cadre of prominent Comintern functionaries and secretaries such as Otto W. Kuusinen, Ludwig Magyar from Hungary, Osip Piatnitsky, Dmitri Manuilsky to mention a few. All of the above were in some way involved in guiding and steering the direction of the LAI. Aside from this biographical information, the book includes 17 images of importance linked to the history of the LAI, and a »Commendatory Foreword« by Robert J.C. Young, Professor of English, Comparative Literature, New York University.

The study is based on documents located in archives in Moscow (Rossiiskii gosudarstvennyi arkhiv sotsial’no-politicheskoi istorii, RGASPI), Berlin (Stiftung Archiv der Parteien und Massenorganisationen der DDR im Bundesarchiv, SAPMO-BArch), Amsterdam (Internationaal Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis, IISG), London (National Archives, NA), and Stockholm (Riksarkivet, RA; Stockholm City Archive, SCA), uncovers why the Comintern established and supported the LAI and its anti-imperialist agenda, disclosing a complicated undertaking, characterised by conflict and the internal struggle for power, involving structural constraints and individual ambitions, defined by the twist and turns of interwar communist ideology and strategy. Wolfgang Hesse:

» Körper und Zeichen. Arbeiterfotografien aus Dohna, Heidenau und Johanngeorgenstadt 1932/33, Dresden, Thelem 2013. 269 pp. (Bausteine aus dem Institut für Sächsische Geschichte und Volkskunde. 24). – ISBN 978-3-9424-1170-7.

V., Dresden. (Information by the author)

VI.2 Conference Reports and Announcements

Rory Castle, Swansea University:

» International Conference on Rosa Luxemburg

Paris, University of Sorbonne, 4–5 October 2013

The 17th International Conference on Rosa Luxemburg, held in Paris, brought together scholars from France, Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Russia, Japan and India, along with around two hundred participants. Discussions centred on Luxemburg’s important contributions to Marxist thought on the subjects of democracy and revolution, which were brought to life by a variety of original papers and thought-provoking questions and discussion from participants. Rosa Luxemburg (1871–1919) is remembered for her belief that »freedom is always the freedom of the dissenter« and had much to say about democracy and revolution in her lifetime, both in criticism of moderates and reformists with the labour movement and of Lenin and the Bolsheviks. Today, in the midst of an international crisis, her writings continue to have a great deal to teach us, as was made clear by many of the speakers, who drew inspiration from Luxemburg’s words nearly a century after her death.

The Conference neatly coincided with two upcoming publications; the sixth volume of Luxemburg’s Gesammelte Werke in German and the first volume of her Collected Works in English. Series editor Annelies Laschitza and Sébastien Budgen of Verso Books explained the significance of the new publications in making the breadth of Luxemburg’s writings available to readers in both languages. Conference speakers included Annelies Laschitza, Narihiko Ito, Rory Castle, Isabel Loureiro, Mylene Gaulard, Michael Löwy, Claudie Weill, Michael Brie, Jean-Numa Ducange, Ottokar Luban, Pablo Slavin, Feliks Tych, Sobhanlal Datta Gupta, Michael Krätke, David Muhlmann, Ingo Schmidt, Jörg Wollenberg, Philippe Courcuff, Frigga Haug, Alexey Gusev, Ben Lewis and Sandra Rein. For a full programme and more information, see: www.internationale-rosa-luxemburg-gesellschaft.de/

The Conference was organised and/or supported by: • International Rosa Luxemburg Society • University of Paris I Panthéon-La Sorbonne / Centre d’Histoire des Systèmes de Pensée Moderne (CHSPM) • Regional Council Ile-de-France • Espaces Marx • Rosa Luxemburg Foundation • Gerda-und-Hermann-Weber-Stiftung • transform! europe • Collectif Smolny • Revue internationale »Actuel Marx« • Revue critique »Contremps«

VIII.2 ANNOUNCEMENTS AND CALLS FOR PAPERS

» Moving the Social – Journal of Social History and the History of Social Movements

Edited for the Institute for Social Movements at the Ruhr-University Bochum by Klartext Verlag, Essen, Germany.

Editor-in-chief: Stefan Berger, Director of the Institute.

Moving the Social – Journal of Social History and the History of Social Movements is a multi-disciplinary, international and peer-reviewed journal. It focuses on transnational and comparative perspectives on the history of social movements set in a wider context of social history. It appears twice yearly. During the last evaluation of the ESF Standing Committee for the Humanities (2011), the Journal was ranked INT2 (international with significant visibility). Moving the Social publishes research at the cutting edge of social history, broadly defined. This involves in particular the analysis of the diversity of economic, social, political and mental structures of social movements, from historical and social science perspectives, and the introduction of new research that is relevant to the field of social movement studies.

Moving the Social is published by Klartext publishers, one of the foremost academic publishers in Germany. The journal is the continuation of the Mitteilungsblatt des Instituts für soziale Bewegungen, which has been successfully published for many years. The new title indicates a desire to internationalise the journal’s profile. However, the editors recognise that in the medium term, the journal will continue to publish also articles in German – despite its declared preference for English-language publications. The editors welcome articles on the »old« labour movements, »new« social movements, regional and global perspectives on social history, as well as the history and theory of historiography, especially where historiographies of social movements and theoretical perspectives on social history are concerned.

Andreas Peglau (Berlin, Germany):

» »Der Fall Wilhelm Reich« (Österreich 2012). Regie: Antonin Svoboda. Mit Klaus Maria Brandauer, Birgit Minichmayr, Julia Jentsch, Gary Lewis, David Rasche u. a.

Nachruf:

» Anton Vladimirovich Antonov-Ovseenko (1920–2013)

The Gulag Museum in Moscow has announced the death of one of its founding members, Anton Antonov-Ovseenko, who passed away on 9 July 2013. Born in Moscow as the son of the famous Bolshevik revolutionary Vladimir Antonov-Ovseenko and having graduated in history in 1939, he was arrested in 1940, shortly after the arrest and the killing of his father. After spending about 13 years in camps and prisons, he was rehabilitated in 1956–1957 and had the possibility to publish two books about his father under the pen name of »Anton Rakitin« – at the same time, he was secretly collecting materials for a more thorough study on Stalinism, which was confiscated by the KGB in 1980. However, his major work »The Time of Stalin« was smuggled out of the Soviet Union and was published in New York in 1980. During late Perestroika and after the fall of the Soviet Union, he was finally able to publish freely, and besides publishing several works on the Great Terror and a biography of Lavrentii Beriia, he involved himself in commemoration work for its victims. It was due to his efforts that the Gulag Museum in Moscow (ul. Petrovka, 16) could open in 2001, of which he was the director until 2011.
